Split core RFI line chokes, in two sizes.

These are high quality ferrite chokes, easily snapped onto power cords, telephone cords, and other lines that are acting as RFI antennas. The smaller one handles lines or cables up to 1/4" in diameter, the larger up to 3/8."  Smaller cords can be wrapped through the center multiple times, providing greatly enhanced filtering.

Alignment Tool, Ceramic Tip 

The right tool for the job-- sure, you can use a jeweler's screwdriver to adjust trim-pots and caps, but how often do you have to guess at the result because the tool is interfering with the circuit?   The Pro'sKit Ceramic Driver (alignment tool) is non-inductive, non-magnetic, thermally and electrically insulated, and anti-static.  The flat tip measures 2mm by 0.4mm, just right for most of the trim caps and pots you will find on circuit boards.  The ceramic tip is rugged, and will last a lifetime if you don't try to use it as a screwdriver. There is a "palm pivot" on the end, so you can turn it through 360 degrees without having to reposition it, and it comes with a plastic protector for the tip.

           Precision Wire Strippers

Stripping the insulation off of the end of a wire sounds like a simple job, but it is surprising how difficult it can be do do it RIGHT.  The ProsKit PK-3001 Precision Wire Strippers are what you need for effortless stripping of the finer wires-- 20 to 30AWG (or 1.0 to 0.2mm for the metrically enabled).  They cover the wire sizes that you will encounter most often in electronic work, from standard hookup wire down to the hair-thin wires used in headsets and ribbon cable.  Well made, the PK-3001 will last a lifetime if not abused.   Compare to other brands costing more than $20!

           Micro Nippers

Forget "Dikes!"  When you are trimming the leads on freshly soldered components, you need a precise instrument to trim flush, with minimum stress on the connection.  Heavy, awkward "diagonal cutting pliers" do a sloppy job and you risk pulling the solder pad off the board.  These are microscopically sharp, hardened steel, and angled for working in close quarters.  They're the ones we use on the OHR workbenches!

Q-Dope (discontinued)

From GC Thorsen, Q-dope is the correct material to seal coils and lock the turns in place.  It is a polystyrene compound that drys quickly and fixes coils without affecting their temperature characteristics, inductance, or Q.  It's supplied in a convenient 2 Oz bottle with applicator.
 
We have had to discontinue Q-Dope primarily because of the cost.  Its only advantage over clear nail polish or nail hardener was that it dried more quickly.  Well, apparently it is known to the State of California that the solvent can be dangerous, so they changed the solvent and put the price up.  At $8.95 for 2 Oz it was a pretty expensive replacement for nail polish, but  in 2006 it got taken off the market again and then came back at around $12 a bottle, so we are dropping our recommendation for Q-dope.  Here in our shop we have started using nail hardner and found the increased drying time to be a very minor inconvenience.

AC Powerstrip Liberator Plus.

Antistatic Wrist Strap.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) or static electricity can destroy sensitive electronic devices without your even knowing it.  Worse, the damage can be done but not become apparent for months or even years after the event.  To avoid ESD you should always be grounded when working with sensitive components, but if you remember your basic electricity studies you do NOT want to be grounded when you are working with electrical equipment!

A "proper" grounding wrist strap has a resistance built into it, so static electricity will discharge slowly and constantly, but a real current (like when you touch the wrong wire with your screwdriver) meets a brick wall.  These straps are comfortable, adjustable, and you can even snap the cord off of the wrist band when you have to leave the work-bench for a minute.  This is almost literally a case of an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure.  If you have ever had to unsolder an IC that was damaged by static, you'll know what we mean!

A must-have when you are removing large amounts of solder.  For example, if you need to unsolder the connections on a pot, expensive braid will do the job but it will take forever and use a lot of braid.  This spring-loaded, metal barrel "solder pump" will pull most of the solder at a touch of the button.  The tip is anti-static, and the unit can easily be disassembled for cleaning and emptying.

Kester's "245" No Clean Solder is the perfect solder to use for electronic kits.  It leaves little or no residue on the board, but flows on smoothly and does a great job.  Our handy sample pack contains 15 grams (about 12' length) of 63/37 flux core solder (.031" diameter) or enough to do most any kit. Highly recommended for our OHR Kits.

Economy Solder

Very similar in performance to Kester's No Clean formulation, this Chinese product is a real bargain at barely half the cost of the Kester solder (which, by the way, is made in Mexico).  The spool is a full Kg or 2.2 pounds, in your choice of .032" or .048" diameter.  The alloy is the same 63-37 and the flux is RMA, low residue,  but  details are lacking. We've already adopted it on one of our production lines here at Milestone Technologies.

Everybody makes mistakes!  When you need to remove a component from a circuit board, the best tool for the job is de-soldering braid.  There are many sizes and flux formulations available, but we've found TechSpray's braids to be the best "all-rounders."
